High price for Goosen’s services

a67a0ac68cde4cd4a48196fee71965c6Sport24 reported that the Western Province will have to fight hard to attain the services of Johan Goosen from French club Racing Metro.

Netwerk24 on Wednesday reported that WP were interested in luring the Springbok fly half to Cape Town.

Goosen though still has two seasons left on his contract with the Parisian club and WP would have to fork out a lot of money to sign him.

He has not been the No 1 fly half at Racing and has also been utilised at fullback. And with All Black pivot Dan Carter also join Racing on a three-year deal after the Rugby World Cup, Goosen would in all likelihood struggle to hold down a starting spot.

Goosen has in recent times fallen behind Handre Pollard and Pat Lambie in the fly half pecking order at the Springboks and a move to the Cape could reinvigorate his career.

Should Western Province be successful in their attempts to lure the former Cheetahs pivot, he would be a welcome addition to their squad, especially with Demetri Catrakilis leaving for Montpellier in France after the completion of this year’s Currie Cup competition.

Catrakilis’s back-up, Kurt Coleman, is struggling to impose himself, while the other fly halves at the union – Robert du Preez, Ernst Stapelberg, Jean-Luc du Plessis and Brandon Thomson – are still inexperienced.
