WPRFU News Update
Western Province Club Rugby reported that there was a Boksmart course held at DHL Newlands last Saturday – the workshop was well attended and the next course will be held at HTS in Bellville on 27 June.
In Youth and Schools news, the capping ceremonies for the WP schools representative teams went very well and now the preparation for their respective tournaments start in earnest.
The Under-15 trials to elect an elite training group was held at Bellville High yesterday and two games were played. We had tremendous talent on show and look forward to seeing the continued development of these youngsters in the next few years.
Furthermore, Racing Metro Under-15 boy’s team will be touring Western Cape from 4 July until 12 July. They will be playing in three games and we hope to arrange one of their games at Newlands prior to the international game.
The launch of the Youth Training Centre at City Park on Tuesday was very successful. The event was attended by around 200 players and spectators including various members of the WP Rugby executive including Mr Peter Jooste, Mr Gerald Njengele, Mr Anele Zita (responsible for women’s rugby) and Mr Danny Jones, GM Amateur Rugby. SARU’s Mr Pat Kuhn and Mr Mahlubi Puzi attended with Mr Puzi making the key note address.
The event was also addressed by Mr Roger Smith (YTC co-ordinator for Western Province).
In Women’s rugby developments, The workshop for women in sport held by the City of Cape Town on 13 June was very well attended with Mr Faizel Felton (Senior Manager WP club rugby) making a presentation on how rugby could contribute as a sporting code of choice for women in the Western Cape that wish to take up sport.
At Western Province we fully support the initiative by the City and gladly partnered with the City to the benefit of all women.
In coaching news, the coaching department will host a RPL (Recognition for Prior Learning) workshop for all coaches that were qualified with SARU Level 1, 2, 3 to discuss the RPL requirements in order to have the coaches qualified under the World Rugby Level 2 coaching qualification. The workshop will be held on Wednesday 24 June 2015 in the Newlands Boardroom at 19h00.
The DHL WP Currie Cup team will be playing a pre-season friendly game against the Pumas as a memorial for the Franschoek disaster victims on 18 July 2015 at Groendal Sports grounds in Franschoek. This is a fantastic way to strengthen the bond between the professional and amateur game and a great initiative.
The kicking workshop planned with Vlok Cilliers at Macassar RFC for 16 June had been postponed to a later date due to Stormers commitments – clubs will be kept informed of when the workshop will be held.
The DHL Stormers team are back in front of their home faithful as they take on the Brumbies in their Super 15 playoff game. Should they win; the team will then travel to Sydney to take on the Waratahs in the semi-final. The action kicks off on Saturday at 17h05 and we wish Alastair Coetzee and his men the very best of luck.
Club-wise, there are no club games for a while but there is a WP Club Rugby tournament which begins this Saturday at 15h30.
In first round action, Blue Jets host False Bay in Khayalitsha, Strand play Goodwood, and the Paarl Region takes on Belhar. The semi-finals and finals will take in the following weeks.
This tournament is a great opportunity for clubs to maintain fitness levels and test themselves against opponents they wouldn’t usually face in normal league competition.
