July Inspiration: Bryan Habana
With Mandela Day on July 18, we’re reminded once again how important it is to inspire one another with positivity and to help the communities around us. Outreach is an overarching theme of Mandela Day but something we should aspire to on a regular basis — not simply on one day of the year.
Springbok wing Bryan Habana is a good example of a South African making a difference in his spare time. A regular fixture in South African rugby since 2004, Habana has remained selfless and hugely charitable despite his rising star status. As a regular supporter of the Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital, amongst other charities, he’s a person we can all emulate.
Habana’s charitable contributions
- Bryan kick-started his charity work in 2007 when he raced a cheetah over 100 metres in an effort to raise awareness about the species being in danger.
- 2009 saw Habana being appointed a member of the Laureus Ambassadors programme, which enabled him to help support a number of inspiring projects that help disadvantaged children.
- In August 2012, to celebrate his 100th Super Rugby appearance, he handed out 100 rugby boots at disadvantaged rugby clubs in Khayelitsha and Bonteheuwel. Habana considered it a privilege to help develop the game of rugby.
- In 2013, Habana was named a patron for FoodBank South Africa. He said he was excited to join a programme that raises awareness about food wastage and fights against food insecurities in the country.
- In July 2013, Habana was awarded R50 000 by Sports and Recreation South Africa to mark his 50th test try, along with a trophy. He donated this prize money to the Nelson Mandela Children’s hospital, to show his support for all that Madiba stood for and to keep his legacy going.
“I believe that successful sportsmen should give back what they can to society”, he said, and he’s been true to his word. Whether a successful sportsman or not, however, we can all take the time to do something small this month, and in the months going forward.
