Best foods to help you lose weight

Losing weight isn’t just about doing the right exercises. It’s a combination of exercise, diet and mindset. Once you have set yourself attainable goals, it’ll be easier to visualise where you want to be so that you have something to focus on and work towards. Changing up your workout routine will keep your body guessing and make losing weight easier, as you’ll be less likely to get stuck in a rut.

However, diet plays an important role too. The phrase ‘you are what you eat’ holds truth. And luckily for us, there are some foods that help us lose weight, be it for the reason that they have minimal calories or that they help speed up our metabolism.

One of our favourites for summer is watermelon. Due to its low calorie count and delicious flavour, it’s a must to add to your summer garden parties. Celery is also a firm favourite, mostly being made up of water. Add it to salads raw for a bit of a crunch. Cook it in soups, stews, and bakes!

To speed up your metabolism, avocado is a great start. This superfood has all the right fats that your body needs for heart-health and 9 amino-acids. It’s easy to have on toast, in a salad or even in your morning smoothie. Greek-style yoghurt is packed with good proteins that your body requires and is an easy on-the-go snack. Add some fruit for more flavour and sweeten it up with a touch of honey.

To wind down after a long day, have a cup of green tea. Research suggests this brew promotes fat burning! Add either a squeeze of lemon juice or a teaspoon of honey if you want more flavour.

Blueberries are a tasty snack, available at most grocery stores in season. These little nuggets of goodness are packed with antioxidants – which help prevent the buildup of free radicals in your body. More little nuggets of goodness are almonds. Nutritionally, these nuts will give you the most bang for your buck. They’re full of heart-healthy fat, fiber (to keep you fuller for longer) and Vitamin E, an antioxidant.

Providing more nutrients than any other food, spinach is right up there on the list. It’s packed with Vitamin C when its leaves are bright and vibrant in colour. This is definitely a food to add to your menu all year round!
All-in-all, one of the best ways to ensure a nutrient-rich diet while keeping slim is to ensure you have a variety of foods. Have as many fresh veggies and fruit as you can – the natural sugars from fruit will give you energy and keep you feeling good!
