South Africa has some of the world’s greatest spots for those who love outdoor exercise. With September being Heritage Month, there is no better way to celebrate Mzansi than heading outdoors for a bit of fresh air and open spaces to get those endorphins running. We’ve put together a list of our favourite outdoor spaces where you can head for some outdoor fitness alternatives – and you can even take the entire family!
1. Sea Point Promenade
Imagine beautiful sunsets and spectacular sunrises, against the backdrop of the spectacular Atlantic Seaboard. At any given time, you will be surrounded by joggers, dog-walkers and kids playing on the Three Anchor Bay playground. For anyone craving outdoor exercise, this is a great space as the promenade has an infectious fitness vibe.
If you want to bring the entire family out for a day of relaxation with some hikes and loads of space for games, Kirstenbosch is just the thing! The park has loads of lawns and space for you to stretch your legs or challenge your kids to a game of tag. The trails, which boast some stunning views, range from super easy to a bit more challenging.
3. Emmarentia Dam
Approximately 6km from Joburg’s city centre, the Emmarentia Dam and Johannesburg botanical garden is an oasis for families and outdoor lovers. A whole range of watersports can be practised at the dam, while the botanical gardens have big lawns for running around and maybe even a bit of yoga.
4. Voortrekker Monument
The famous Voortrekker Monument in Pretoria has recently begun hosting great summer music festivals as well as some foodie events. But even when it’s quiet, cyclists, runners and hiking enthusiasts will be able to find something to do at the historic site. It can also be considered a family spot, with loads to learn and to do. If you are serious about being part of a group fitness enthusiasts at the Voortrekker Monument, they also have an active athletics club for you to join.
5. Johannesburg Zoo
If the new LISS cardio craze is your thing, then what could be better than taking a walk with a view? Heading to the Johannesburg Zoo, you have the opportunity of heading out on those brisk walks while seeing some of the most amazing zoo animals. Convincing the family to join in won’t be hard, with majestic animals to see and a lot of interesting things to learn about.
This Heritage Day, head out into our insanely beautiful country, take the entire family along, and not only have a braai, but get that heart rate pumping!
