Few things are as characteristically South African as the braai broodjie. With its delicious crusty bread texture, with melting cheese, tomato and sweet cooked onion, often accompanied by the legend that is Mrs Balls, infused with that woodfire flavour, it has become somewhat of a cultural phenomenon.

But keeping things healthy at braai time can be a challenge. That’s why we set out to find three amazing recipes for healthier alternatives to the old-fashioned version of the braai broodjie – and they may even be better than their traditional counterpart.

  1. Cauliflower Crust Braaibroodjie

The first option is a cauliflower crust braaibroodjie, made with only 5 simple ingredients. The bread is replaced with a cauliflower crust that can easily made in the oven and tastes delicious.

What you will need for two braai broodjies:

1 cauliflower head , 1 egg, ½ cup mozzarella cheese, 1t butter,  ⅓ cup cheddar cheese, salt and pepper.

2. Aubergine Braabroodjie

The aubergine braai broodjie takes a carb-free spin on the classic version. This recipe is made of only four ingredients – 2 large aubergines, 60 ml olive oil 200g cheese and 4 large tomatoes.

You can even add salami, pastrami or basil pesto for more flavour!

3. Sourdough Sundried Tomato and Pesto-Mayo Braaibroodje

Made with sourdough bread which is full of wholegrains and fiber-rich this is a great alternative to consider. This recipe features all the good stiff – cheese, sundried tomatoes, mayo and basil pesto.
