What began as a personal journey of self-care is now a yoga-centred platform that wants to re-calibrate the notion of “wellness”.

Not only has Jessamyn Stanley racked up a staggering 350k followers by striking asanas on Instagram, but she is also a voice for practicing self-care and body positivity.

Jessamyn Stanley says that self-care is critical to her overall survival. Some of the self-care rituals she swears by include bubble baths, massages and facials. She also recently started unplugging from social media and technology and tries to do it frequently, while taking time to get outside.

Her advice to people who want to follow in her footsteps, is to practice yoga if you want to be a yoga teacher. Practice the breath work and the meditation and the pursuit within the self. From that experience, you will be guided if you’re meant to teach others.

If you want to be an entrepreneur, if you want to be self-employed, and if you want to use your college major in a way that people might not expect you to, be open to the lessons outside of what is being taught to you. Put yourself into unusual circumstances.

“Be down for the unexpected. Be down to trust yourself above all else.”

Thanks to athletes like Jessamyn, the wellness industry is starting to become less intimidating and more inclusive of all body types. Jessamyn is a phenomenal yoga instructor and author of Every Body Yoga, and she is on a mission to let the world know that we can all practice yoga, no matter what size or body shape we are.

We live in a society of instant gratification and I think many of us tend to expect that one day self-confidence will appear out of thin air. However, obstacles are how we grow stronger. Verbal + emotional bullet wounds make us better. Usually, people who’ve never been bullied evolve into hypersensitive adults who buckle under the slightest bit of emotional pressure. I am forever grateful for the people who showed me no mercy as a child, who made it their mission to let me know just how “fat”, “ashy”,and “ugly” I was in their estimation. Because of those “insults”, I was forced to get to know myself inside and outside those descriptions. I didn’t know it at the time, but those shitty experiences were tests of character & strength. And strength means nothing if it’s not tested. Often, the test is waking up and going to school or work in active defiance of our oppressors. I guess what I’m saying is that it gets better. Really. If you’re afraid to go to school tomorrow because your classmates make fun of you, or if you eat lunch in your car while at work because you can’t stand the smirks and stares in the break room, believe me- it gets better. Building an internal fortress against those who mean you ill will is hard as fuck, but the payoff beats being a victim. So happy to be home tomorrow at noon, @durhamyoga! FYI, after 1/19, I’ll be on the west coast w/ @nolatrees until late February for #mynameisnola West Coast Edition. I’m back in Colorado and I’ve forgotten how much I love this state. I am extremely excited to teach w/ babygirl @nolatrees this weekend at Denver’s @theyogamat_- check out my snapchat for all of our ridiculous antics- I’m @mynameisjessamy. I am extremely grateful for this life I’m able to live, and I constantly remind myself to never take it for granted. Throwback to another dope workshop weekend at Dubai’s @voyogauae, when I was afforded the opportunity to help a beautiful group of people become literal shooting stars. Btw, my random ass #giveaway ends on Sunday, guys- If you want to win a free @lululemon mat, @lululemon headband, @108yogalove asana deck, or one of three @yogawillsavetheworld coloring books, scroll down to the announcement poster and tell the story of your first yoga class OR tell us why you’ve never tried yoga. PS- I keep getting Twitter questions about whether or not I support @lululemon. This is the thing- I wear a solid size US14, sometimes US16. @lululemonlabyvr legit doesn’t make clothes in my size. End of story. I guess my money isn’t green to them. The thing is, they do make nice yoga mats. So I will always endorse “The Mat”, even if they keep acting like assholes in the realm of #plussizes. It’s not like they are acting like any more of an asshole than some other brands, ya dig? 💯 📸 by @lathief_photography
