Celebrate Whilst Sticking to your Diet

As we come out of the festive season, that doesn’t mean the celebrations stop there. There are always birthdays to attend, Valentine’s Day coming up and family gatherings. If you’re on a diet, you may be inclined to give these events a skip, or stress about what you’ll be eating. But there are ways to stick to your diet without missing out on any of the celebrations!

First of all, it’s not a necessity that you ditch all treats completely. Remember, moderation is a key factor to a lot of diets. If you feel as though you really cannot resist that chocolate dessert, have a small helping. Simply take it off your calorie count for the day. If you’re worried about it, nowadays there are always substitutes for the sweet tooth without all the calories. Instead of having that sugar-packed chocolate, opt for dark chocolate – it has considerably less sugar and has numerous health benefits.

To make things a lot easier for yourself, try dieting with your friends if you can! This helps you motivate one another and keep strong. This way, you won’t be looking longingly at what you can’t have on your friends dinner plate. Get together and share your healthy recipes with one another – you can come up with your favourite recipes for sweet and savoury. Whilst doing this, you can organise dinners with your friends and cook together so you learn from one another too.

For some alternatives for celebratory meals, a big one is switching to wholegrain. Instead of white rice or white bread, try brown rice or quinoa and whole wheat bread. These grains are loaded with B vitamins and are easier for your body to digest. B vitamins help your body deal with stress and strengthen hair, giving it more shine! Along with that, try eat a range of colourful foods to load up on all the vitamins and nutrients you can. Think of this as a rainbow of foods, which will help your body maintain a healthy weight by supporting its metabolism. This variety of foods also aid one another, for example, to eat a diet rich in iron, you need to increase your intake of vitamin C to help your body absorb the iron.

If you’re having a salad to accompany your dinner, or having it as dinner, instead of having iceberg lettuce with a creamy dressing, try a leafy green salad with a light or vinegar based dressing. If you’re using regular ground beef for dinner, try opt for a lean ground beef instead. Use fresh vegetables instead of canned vegetables, and use fresh fruit juice in place of store bought juices.

Whether you are making these healthy changes by yourself or with friends, always keep an eye out for the more nutritious option and do some research if you aren’t sure of certain foods. You don’t have to make big sacrifices, simply make some alterations to your diet and you’ll soon adjust!
