Who Needs Motivation When You Can Have an App?
So you’ve seen all the memes and Instagram posts from the #fitfam that were supposed to #fitspire you to create that summer body made during winter, but somehow you just can’t seem to get yourself up and about to take that gym selfie. Well, don’t sweat about not sweating just yet. Here are a few apps that will help motivate you to be more active this winter.
Daily Yoga – Fitness On-the-Go is the perfect motivation to finding that balance in body and mind. With soothing music and sound to calm your mind and get you in that mood to transform your mind and body. With more than 50 different yoga classes. The app caters for different levels of yogis, beginners or advanced. The app also works towards creating a sense of community with a built in forum, where you can share tips with other users, or they can simply be the encouragement you need when you’re not feeling lifted enough to take control of your mind and body.
For those days where you felt that you needed to warm up your insides in order to eradicate the cold on your outsides, MyFitnessPal is ideal. Medical studies have proven that jotting down your eating habits in a food journal could double your weight loss! This app not only functions as a food journal, but also calculates your calorie intake, and how much calories you’re allowed to consume per day, based on your weight loss, weight gain or weight maintenance goal per week. MyFitnessPal is also compatible with various fitness trackers, which means that the app will source your fitness data for the day and see how many of those calories you’ve managed to burn.
Progression offers the option of designing your own fitness program. It provides stats of your workout on a particular day, as well as over a period of time. The app also offers a rest timer, ensuring that you don’t rest for too long, or even too little between your workout sets. What’s even more awesome about this app is that it is integrated with your Dropbox account. The app syncs to Dropbox and then backs up all your workout data, so even if you upgrade or lose your phone, your Progression data will be safe and secure.
Strava is a running and cycling app that will entice the competitive type. It allows you to compete with other participants signed into the app at that very moment. The app will collect data from other users and locate the one with the best time. If you’re the winner of the virtual challenge, bragging rights are definitely in order!
If you’re not up for simply accepting bragging rights, but want more than just that, then Pact may be the app for you. Previously known as Gym Pact, Pact gives new meaning to the cliche’ of putting your money where your mouth is. The app uses your GPS location to find out whether you actually managed to make it to the gym, as often as you said you would. You can’t fool your GPS, and for those who thought they could drive by and just pin their location to Pact, the app will determine whether or not you stayed at the gym for the amount of time that your workout usually lasts. If you reach your goal, you’ll receive some cash that you’ve wagered on via the app. If that’s not motivation right there, I don’t know what is.
For those who doesn’t really need the extra cash (who doesn’t, right?) there is an app designed to donate a sum of money to charity for every successful mile that you’ve run, walked or cycled, based on your chosen method of exercise. Charity Mile sources corporate sponsors to donate on your behalf and donates to a charity of your choice.
Zombies, Run! offers some good old fun to your workout! It is an interactive app that casts you as a handler and gatherer of equipment to help the apocalyptic survivor town, called Abel Township. The app tells you that the virtual Zombies are close by when you’re slowing down, in order to motivate you to keep going. As the handler, your job is to collect equipment in order to help Abel Township fight off the Zombies and prevent them from getting in. With 23 missions and a 20km challenge, you’ll be running from one reality to the next.
