Cutting to the core

Most South African gym-goers are paying for club facilities and frills they neither want nor use. But current trends in the fitness-club industry show that, when it comes to members’ needs, extras are out and essentials are in. It’s time to get back to basics and exercise the right to just pay for exercise.

You don’t play squash or tennis. You don’t use the sauna and never have time for an on-site massage. You did swim in the pool. Well, once. And sometimes, you even skip the change-room showers in favour of a long post-workout soak at home. Yes, you pound the treadmill regularly and pump weights two or three times a week. But the fact is, you’re paying for way more than a couple of pop-ins to the gym.
