Holiday Health tips – how to stay fit during the Festive Season

There’s something about the Christmas season that has the unique ability to scupper your best-laid fitness plans. We get it: when you’re swept up in the revelry of festive cheer, exercise can be the furthest thing from your mind. But don’t despair, because the Zone Fitness team has put together some tricks and tips to help you approach the end-of-year holidays the right way and get the most out of your body when you’re in holiday mode.

Eat right

Trust us, eating well over the holidays will save you a lot of time in the long run. Get into the habit of sticking to a good, lean diet, cheating on those days when celebration calls for an extra serving or two.

One easy principle is to cut out refined sugars. Read labels carefully and aim to consume no more than 4g of sugar a day, allowing yourself the luxury of sugar on Christmas itself. Beware fruit juices, sauces and cereals: these are all packed with hidden sugars.

Write down what you’re eating

When you’re looking to stay in shape, diaries are an excellent resource that serve to highlight your worst habits.

By meticulously diarising what you’re eating when, you’re laying down a blueprint to improve your diet in the future, enabling you to share your findings with a personal trainer or dietitian who can suggest improvements going forward. So, even if you’re kicking up on the couch in front of the TV, keep that pen and notebook handy.

Find time for the gym

You don’t need to slave away for hours on end in the gym this Christmas holiday, but do make an effort to go. A quick 30-40 minute session three times a week will help shift your body into gear.

Make it high intensity

A good way to maximise your training is to up the intensity of each individual session. At Zone Fitness, we think high-intensity training is a sure-fire way to see results quickly. The next time you’re on the treadmill, push yourself at your maximum intensity for two minutes, then take an extended break, as opposed to operating at an easy pace for twenty minutes.

Don’t wait for the New Year

It’s easy to put off your body dreams for the new year, but resist that temptation. There’s nothing like putting intentions into action in the here and now. Get motivated, find your energy and set yourself a goal.

Train with a friend

Why should fitness be a solo pursuit? Go to gym with a friend and make an experience out of it. Most of all, have fun.

From the Zone team, have a wonderful Christmas.
