The Benefits of Regular Exercise for Healthy Sleep: Insights from a Recent Study
Exercise and Reduced Risk of Insomnia
Exercising at least twice a week significantly cuts the risk of insomnia, according to a study. The research found that people who worked out regularly were 42% less likely to have trouble getting to sleep and 22% less likely to report any insomnia symptoms.
Long-Term Exercise and Sleep Quality
Those who maintain a consistent exercise routine over the long term are 55% more likely to be normal sleepers, achieving six to eight hours of sleep, compared to those who are inactive. The study, published in the BMJ Open journal, also discovered that consistent exercisers were about a third (29%) less likely to be short sleepers (under six hours per night). Furthermore, they were 52% less likely to sleep for an extended period (over nine hours a night).
Participant Demographics
Experts analyzed data from 4,339 people, with an approximate 50/50 gender split, from nine European countries. Participants were asked about their exercise habits at the start of the study and again a decade later. They were also questioned about any insomnia symptoms such as difficulty getting to sleep, staying asleep, waking too early, and the duration of their sleep.
Key Findings and Expert Analysis
The experts’ analysis showed that “physically active people have a lower risk of some insomnia symptoms and extreme sleep durations, both long and short.” However, the researchers, including academics from Imperial College London and Reykjavik University, cautioned that the sleep benefits could disappear if people stopped exercising.
The Role of Physical Activity in Sleep Health
Huw Edwards, chief executive of Ukactive, the trade body for the physical activity sector, commented on the study’s findings: “This study shows the essential role that physical activity can play in lowering the risk of insomnia, and we know that a good night’s sleep helps us to feel better and be more productive the following day.”
